About

Shippers, while shipping server equipment, face a tough challenge of ensuring the safety of shipment that has to travel fast with costs under control. Over the years, shippers have been paying attention to the speed and costs, while ignoring safety at an alarming level. While doing so, they usually end up making a few mistakes.

That said, shipping companies must avoid these four mistakes at all costs.

  • The company you hire should handle the shipment throughout the process. Outsourcing of shipment tasks is one of the most common practices in the shipping industry, and it might not be in your best interest if you must rely on a shipping provider taking complete responsibility for your shipments. You want your provider to take care of your server equipment during the shipping process, and it might not be possible if they outsource any part of the shipping process to other shippers.
  • At the very least, your shipping provider should use double-wall cardboard boxes to protect your server machines, if the use of wooden crates is out of the question. A server is not the type of equipment that you can strap to pallets.
  • Most of the shipping providers consider OEM (original equipment manufacturer) packaging to be the standard protection for server machines. However, the matter of fact is that OEM packaging provides only basic-level protection, which may not be enough to prevent damages that might occur in a rough freight world. The best practice is to get complete information about the optimal packaging of your server machines.
  • Make sure that you are not using Styrofoam to package your server machines. This material provides minimal protection against shock and vibration. Moreover, it tends to flake more quickly than you think. These flakes can pass through openings in your equipment to come in contact with the core circuit to cause pressing and, sometimes, irreversible damages. The best practice is to use cut-to-fit polyethylene foam, which is the best shock absorber. This foam allows your equipment to reach the destination without receiving any harm.

The risk of damage is always high when you are shipping delicate machines, such as server computers. But there is no other way for your customers to receive the products that you sell. Therefore, it is necessary to pay attention to the optimal packaging practices to make sure that your equipment is secured well before you hand it over to your shipping provider.
